Goalkeeper coaching on the coast
Newport Beach is the academy’s newest location, bringing specialist goalkeeper coaching closer to families along the Orange County coast. Goalkeepers from Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Huntington Beach, Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach can train with the academy nearby.
Sessions take place at Coastal Peak Park, 20403 E Coastal Peak, in Newport Coast. Evening groups are split by age so every goalkeeper trains at the right speed:
- 5:30 to 6:30 pm, ages 7 to 9. Coordination, catching shapes, footwork and safe diving progressions.
- 6:30 to 7:30 pm, ages 10 to 12. The golden age of technique: set position, handling, footwork across the goal and diving.
- 7:30 to 8:30 pm, ages 13 to 15. Explosive diving, crosses, one-on-ones and distribution for competitive club and high school soccer.
The same method as every academy location
Every session in Newport Beach follows the method developed by head coach Claysson De Lima, 2021 MASL Goalkeeper of the Year:
- Footwork and set position, so the goalkeeper is balanced before every shot.
- Handling and diving, taught progressively by age.
- Game situations, including one-on-ones, rebounds and crosses.
- Distribution, because modern goalkeepers start the attack with hands and feet.
Groups are organized by age and level. Younger goalkeepers focus on coordination, catching and safe falling; teenagers work on explosive diving, crosses and game management for competitive club and high school soccer.
Who it is for
Newport Beach groups are for goalkeepers ages 7 to 15 at every level: players in their first season in goal, recreational and AYSO keepers who want to feel confident, and competitive club goalkeepers preparing for tryouts and showcases.
Getting started
Because Newport Beach groups are new, spots are limited while we build each age group. Send us a request with your goalkeeper’s age, club and preferred days, and we will reply the same day with the available times. Private sessions are also available for goalkeepers who want focused one-on-one work.
How to choose a goalkeeper coach in Orange County
Orange County has many soccer clubs but few coaches who work only with goalkeepers. When you compare options, ask:
- Is the coach a goalkeeper? Goalkeeping is a different sport inside soccer. Someone who has played the position at a high level sees details others miss.
- Are sessions only for goalkeepers? Many “goalkeeper sessions” are really shooting practice for field players. Specialist training is built around the keeper.
- Are groups organized by age and level? A 7-year-old and a 16-year-old should not do the same drills.
- Is diving taught progressively? Safe technique matters more than spectacular saves for young keepers.
- Will you know what your goalkeeper worked on? Clear feedback after each session helps families support progress at home.
De Lima GK Academy answers yes to every one of these questions, in Newport Beach and at every location.
