What is the best age to start goalkeeper training?
Children can start goalkeeper training at 6. What changes with age is not whether to train, but what to train. Here is a simple guide for parents.

Many parents ask when their child should start training as a goalkeeper. The short answer: as soon as they enjoy playing in goal. At De Lima GK Academy we train goalkeepers from age 6, and the training changes as they grow.
Ages 6 to 8: play, coordination and courage
At this age, goalkeeper training should feel like play. Children learn to catch with the right hand shapes, move their feet, and fall safely through games and short challenges. The goal is confidence, not perfection.
Ages 9 to 12: the golden age of technique
Between 9 and 12, children learn new movements quickly. This is the best time to build solid technique: the set position, handling, footwork across the goal and progressive diving. Habits formed now tend to last.
Ages 13 and up: power, decisions and the modern game
Teenagers gain strength and speed. Training adds explosive diving, crosses, one-on-ones and distribution, plus the decisions and communication that competitive and high school soccer demand.
Signs your child is ready for specialist coaching
- They ask to play in goal or volunteer at practice.
- They are afraid of the ball or of diving and want to feel safer.
- They play in goal for their team but rarely get specific coaching.
- They have tryouts or a new team coming up.
What matters most
Whatever the age, look for training that is built only for goalkeepers, organized by age and level, and that teaches diving progressively. Starting early is helpful; starting with the right technique is what makes the difference.
